What's a visit with me like?
My home visits are usually 2 hours in duration. Beforehand I like to have a phone conversation to learn of what has been occurring with feedings and if there is any immediate support I can provide i.e. damaged nipples, whether to pump etc. At the home visit I observe a feeding and take a pre and post weight to assess the baby's intake and weight. We work with latch and positioning and any issues occurring. I provide a plan with the next steps in increasing comfort and reaching mom's goals. One appointment covers a preliminary phone call to go over current situation, a home visit with infant scale, and any follow up phone call, email or texts.
Describe your philosophy towards breastfeeding and feeding.
My breastfeeding policy is to meet mothers and couples where they are at. This means supporting them in whatever are their breastfeeding aims. Each family has a unique configuration of needs. Some mothers struggle with latch, or milk supply, some with frequency of feeding, and some with all of the above! My intention is to be present and provide support as needs change as is evident in those first weeks of a baby's life.
What is your favorite part of working with new parents and infants?
I am in love with infants. It is a very precious time when a baby is brought home for the first time. It is also accompanied by stress and uncertainty. I feel very satisfied to aid in reassuring parents and addressing any breastfeeding issues so that parents can build their confidence and also be reassured that the advice they get is professional, evidence-based and compatible with their physician's guidance.
Describe any particular areas of expertise related to feeding
I have worked in a NICU and Special Care Nursery setting for 8 years supporting mothers with supplementation of their late pre-term or premature babies helping them to move towards more exclusive breastfeeding.
